Minimum Age
Our teachings require a maturity of mind and body. Power is developed with age. The focused application of efficient power in our martial art requires concentration. speed and alertness all working together. Accordingly, we believe that the minimum age of our members is to be at least 16 years of age.
Etiquette
We operate under traditional Japanese etiquette in our dojo (school). Our rules of etiquette are:
- - Members should bow to the front on entering and departing the dojo
- - Members should use proper titles when addressing seniors - instructors as 'sensei' and assistant instructors as 'sempai' when addressing an instructor in training or with a dogi (uniform) on or discussing martial arts outside training times
- - Strictly no smoking, drinking or drugs in the dojo
- - Members are to maintain good personal hygeine, including washing and airing dogi (uniform) regularly, showering and using deodorant and keeping toe and finger nails short at all times
- - Jewelry is prohibited during training
- - Be cautious and respectful of others during training
- - Stand at position of attention when receiving instruction and respond immediately to such instructions
- - Always acknowledge correction from instructors by uttering a loud 'hai'
- - Know the correct method of standing, kneeling and bowing at the start and end of class
- - Learn the kata names and become familiar with karate terminology
- - Approach the dojo and depart in a quiet and peaceful manner and conduct yourself with respect and humility
Dojo Oath
We the members of Goshu Karate-do Yonshin Kai strive to fulfill these pledges:
- - The dojo is a sacred place where everything begins and ends with respect and good manners
- - Train your mind and body to make positive contributions to family, community and cultivate your moral sense
- - Be modest in your ways, courteous and make efforts for the development of good character
- - Don't be obsessed with youthful exuberance, but endeavour to acquire the spirit of improvement
- - Always be taken to learn and guide and remember to remain as innocent as you were as a novice
